Iowa Better Concrete Conference
November 3, 2011 ~ Scheman Building, Ames, Iowa
The 2011 Better Concrete Conference will be held in the Scheman Building on the Iowa State University campus on Thursday November 3, 2011.
The Better Concrete Conference is designed to put you in direct contact with concrete producers, contractors, owners, and designers to discuss ways to enhance the production or performance of concrete. As an owner or designer you can see first-hand how the concrete option can reduce the cost or improve the constructability of your future projects.

Are you involved in the specification, design, production and placement of Portland cement concrete? If you answered "yes," this program will help you stay abreast of the most recent changes in the industry. If you answered "no," join us to learn more about what concrete can do for your business.
The conference this year provides an opportunity to learn how concrete materials and construction technology has evolved over the last 80-years. The Hoover Dam Mass Concrete studies, sponsored by the Bureau of Reclamation in the late 1920's, provided the information on the technical properties of Portland cement concrete and aggregates to allow the building of the Hoover Dam in 1931-1935, one of the great civil engineering and construction achievements of the 20th century. Concrete technology continues to evolve today as we'll examine the applications for Portland Cement Pervious Concrete and new procedures for more durable concrete, moisture control, and high-end commercial applications for decorative concrete installations.

The specific 2011 conference objectives are:

  • Learn more about the Hoover Dam Mass concrete studies and the construction of the dam.
  • Learn more how concrete construction technology has been used in the repair and retro-fit of the Locks and Dams on the Mississippi River.
  • Learn more about the new emerging applications for concrete towers to support the move to higher and larger wind turbines.
  • Get an update on the latest trends and challenges in design and construction of pervious concrete pavements.
  • Improve your knowledge of the procedures for partial and full-depth patching of concrete.
  • Participate in the three special topic concurrent sessions:
    • Parking Lots and Trails (sub-grades, pavement design, trail design and construction.
    • Decorative concretes, soil moisture control under concrete floors, and a case study on high-end commercial floors.
    • Concrete durability - from materials and testing, curing and sealing, and a report on de-icing and joint durability in roadway pavements.
Sponsors for this conference include: Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering Department, ISU, Iowa Chapter of ACI, Iowa Department of Transportation, Iowa Concrete Paving Association, Iowa Ready Mixed Concrete Association and Portland Cement Association.
