Program Information:
The
Fundamental Physics of Ferroelectrics and Related Materials
workshop has been held every year since 1990, making 2013 the 24th annual meeting. This meeting features an international list of speakers focused on significant new ideas and cutting edge developments in the field of ferroelectric materials. The workshop is intended to bring together a diverse set of researchers from around the world in the fields of materials physics and engineering, both theorists and experimentalists, in order to facilitate the interdisciplinary exchange of ideas.
The physics underlying the ferroelectric response in materials is highly complicated. The structural instabilities responsible for the spontaneous polarization depend upon the interplay of multiple variables. Within a simple ferroelectric compound the atomic displacements, lattice strain, and local dipoles are coupled in a non-trivial fashion to determine the ferroelectric phase. These interactions are strongly affected by the application of thermal energy and electric fields. Understanding the complex effects that govern these materials has been a monumental challenge that has required the combined effort of the research community. This workshop series has played a significant role in fostering the multi-institutional collaborations necessary for the large scales studies devoted to understanding the fundamental physics. At these meetings new experimental methods are presented and theoretical techniques explained. The culture fostered by the regular attendees of this meeting encourages scientific discussions to extend into the breaks and dining periods.
This year the workshop will feature sessions focused on: Multiferroics, Ferroelectrics, Relaxors, Theory and Modeling, Characterization Methods, Domains and Nanostructure, Interfaces and Surfaces, Non-oxide Ferroelectrics, Material Synthesis and Growth, and Phase Transformations.
