The New Norm of Faculty Flexibility: Transforming the Culture in Science & Engineering
Co-sponsored by Iowa State University ADVANCE Program and the American Council on Education, Center for Effective Leadership
October 10-11, 2008
Location:
Scheman Building - Ames Iowa
Description:
Faculty and administrators from leading research universities are invited to take part in discussions that will help us in re-creating academic careers, careers that allow for the management of both professional and personal lives.
Conference Goals:
To take a lead role in the national conversation on flexible careers, with particular emphasis on STEM disciplines.
To provide a forum for leading researchers and voices in the field.
To allow participants to contribute to building the national conversation on STEM careers.
To ensure that participants go away with information about best practices and with a team understanding of the next steps their institutions need to take.
To play a role in "galvanizing" the conversation among ADVANCE schools directly dealing with these issues.
To create an exciting event that will be seen as an important milestone in transforming academic careers in STEM.
Attend as an Individual Participant or as a Team
All participants will:
Share and learn about effective policy implementations that can be applied toward institutional changes in academic careers and in the personal lives of faculty.
Network with delegates from other institutions and bridge the gap in research.
Hear from high profile keynote speakers and panels of experts discussing a range of topics that will provide delegates with the tools and resources for implementing change.
Bring a Team from your institution to:
Develop action plans with your team and move the conversation ahead at your campus.
We suggest that a team comprise 3-5 delegates who will engage in discussions and make plans to take the lessons learned at the conference back to their home institutions. There will be time during break-out sessions for team members to meet together and to plan. This team approach has been very successful at other conferences and we look forward to welcoming teams to this conference.

Conference delegates are encouraged to submit a
poster
illustrating research and practices at their home institutions. The poster session offers participants the opportunity to display information and exchange opinions with colleagues.
