Midwestern Protective Relay Short Course
Monday, February 11 - Thursday, February 14, 2008 - Scheman Building, ISU
Welcome to the Midwestern Protective Relay Short Course
The Optional pre-course will begin with registration at 1:00 p.m., Monday, February 11, at the Scheman Building on the campus of Iowa State University.

Registration for the Midwestern Protective Relay short course begins at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 12.

Your registration fee of $700 includes all program materials, three lunches, Wednesday evening reception, and refreshment breaks.

Members of ISU's Electric Power Research Center (EPRC) may register for the reduced rate of $600.
The emphasis in this year's course will be twofold. First, we will focus on Electro-Mechanical (EM) relays of all types. Most of the relays in service today are still of the EM variety, but the original manufacturers of these relays no longer offer instruction and support. Many new relay technicians find it difficult to obtain formal instruction on EM relays. Operation, testing, and maintenance of EM relays will be the subject of the optional Pre-course on Monday afternoon (no additional charge). EM relays will also be covered to a greater depth than usual in the Tuesday lecture.
Second, we will emphasize bus and transformer differential EM and microprocessor-based relays. Tuesday's lecture will include information on fundamentals of the operation of these relays and an explanation of a group of relay settings to be applied to these relays during hands-on testing.
On Wednesday morning representatives for various relay manufacturers in parallel sessions will explain how these settings are to be applied to their relays and include any other information about their product line they deem pertinent. Following that, test set representatives in parallel sessions will explain how settings are applied using their test sets and include other information about their latest hardware and software features.
Hands-on testing will take place Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning. Relay manufacturers are invited to supply microprocessor-based differential relays for testing. Utilities are asked to supply EM relays for testing, and individual attendees are invited to bring along EM relays of their choosing for testing. The assistance of senior relay technicians with experience in testing EM relays will be much appreciated.
Thursday afternoon will be devoted to remaining questions, answers, and wrap-up.

Optional Pre-course

February 11, 2008
On Monday afternoon an optional course will be presented by Ametek/Pulsar Larry and Nate Spurgeon of Power Control Systems Plus on operation, testing, and maintenance of EM relays. relay channel communications equipment (carrier, tone, fiber optics, etc.). There will be no additional charge for this course.
