Roy Schultz Lectureship Series
The Roy Schultz Lectureship Series was established through a generous gift by Dr. Roy Schultz (ISU DVM '60, MS '81) and his wife, Jan (ISU BA '59). Roy, an internationally renowned swine practitioner, and Jan have requested that the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine provide high-quality educational opportunities for college faculty and Iowa practitioners to enhance swine practice and the delivery of quality veterinary services to the swine industry. This Lectureship series is designed to facilitate these efforts.
Roy is the embodiment of the ISU Science with Practice motto. In the face of mounting losses associated with an emerging respiratory disease- Haemophilus pleuropneumonia (now APP), Roy took several years from his practice to characterize the disease, clinical and pathologic lesions, and to investigate control and mitigation strategies that would benefit his clients. In the process, he provided leading edge information on this disease for the research and practice communities.
Dr. David J. Taylor MA, PhD, Vet MB, DipECPHM, DipECVPH, MRCVS
Dr David Taylor is the Professor of Veterinary Bacteriology and Public Health at the University of Glasgow. Dr. Taylor graduated from the University of Cambridge in 1969. While working on his PhD in 1971 he was integral in the world-wide effort that lead to the discovery and characterization of the swine dysentery causative organism. He was active in developing science-based protocols for the eradication of swine dysentery on production farms. Subsequently, he has spent a career in expanding veterinary knowledge through characterization and control of bacterial diseases of swine and other species. Dr. Taylor has published a "Colour Atlas of Diseases and Disorders of the Pig" as a practical guide for practitioner identification of a wide range of conditions seen in swine, and has been an editor of the world acclaimed Diseases of Swine --7th to 9th editions, author of Pig Diseases, a concise reference book and the Diseases website of Pig Progress. He has travelled extensively to experience swine production in a wide range of venues and has provided guidance for large numbers of graduate and professional students. These activities, coupled with a fertile and inquisitive mind, have provided a deep and rich knowledge base of swine diseases and their control. Dr Taylor will share some of those experiences during his Roy Schultz Lecture.
